Flash Fiction Challenge: Jungle Monkeys

Welcome to the third weekly flash fiction challenge of January!!  Here are the rules:
  • You have one week to submit if you want to be included.
  • You are up to challenge yourself AND win a copy of either my short story, Nothing Lasts Forever, or a copy of my giant book of poetry, Bony Fingered Limbs.  Just let me know which you'd prefer, should you be chosen!  :)  It will come to you via email as a PDF file, DRM-free, so you can send it to whatever e-book-reader-device you may prefer.  ALSO, If you win so often you run out of choices, I will offer my services in editing something of yours, so there is always incentive!
  • Your word cap this week is 1000 words, so it's a little shorter, like last week!  That makes it a bit harder, but I think you can do it!  We'll work our way down shorter each month until we're awesomely churning out quickie stories like pros.  It is a good thing.
  • Your challenge for this week is something I am calling Jungle Monkeys.  Let the photo above be your inspiration!
  • Get me your submissions by Midnight next Friday morning, 1-27-12, Mountain Standard Time.  Link us your story in the comment area!  Put it up on your own blog, or on a public note on Facebook or in a Google Document file.  Somewhere so we can all see it.  Make sure you link your story!  Just  to be sure it's not passed over by accident, missed, or not included in the contest!  Thanks!

Anyway!! Let's see what you've got!

  1. I'm not sure if it's just my computer not letting it load, but I can't see a picture. O.O

  2. Sorry about that! I set up a bunch of them to auto-post and must have missed this one's image! :) Should be up now.

  3. Awesome. I think I have something mind already!

Oh wait... 1000 words again. Eeek!

  4. Be prepared! The ones with February as the start date will be 800!

  5. I've done 300 word, 100 word, and 3 sentence stories before! It isn't super easy, by any means, but it does increase the challenge.

There's a 100 word story up here somewhere with the subject of revenge... would have been last summer or fall? I'd have to look for it. ;)

  7. Firstly, I never had one of these things, played on one of these things and outside of pictures I googled for this challenge, never seen one of these things, but here is my story:

  8. The almost true story of my kid and his very own Jungle Monkey adventure!

I call it Hands Free Monkey.

  9. Here's mine! Decided to go against the usual for a challenge like this and make it a sad story ^^

  10. My true story. A taste of history mixed in.

  11. I say "almost true story" for mine because it's from the kid's perspective. And I made him out to be more of a daredevil than he really is. I have no idea what was going through his mind at the time, really! He is a very quiet kid who doesn't explain himself very clearly. Or very often. :)

There you go...hope you enjoy "Jungle Gym of Love." Thanks once again for judging Rebecca. :)

  13. Time to judge! There are 5 to look over this time? I'm on it! Should have an answer by bedtime tonight. Depending on how much the kids let me read when they get home.

  14. Kristy: 24
Love the interaction with the kids and the little girl point of view! Sounds very much like the line of thinking my 7 year old son would use, if he were trying to get his way, sneakily. Nicely done!

    Nicola: 22
The cruelty of the other kids is so often seen… Good for Sophina, standing up for herself and not letting it get her down for too long!

    Abbi: 23
Very sad, but all too true. Was almost too short! I’d love to read this written out in detail, as long as you feel it “should” be! Excellent premise for a full length book. More length would evoke even more emotion. :)

    Laurie: 22
Great little story! Had me gasping with the little girl who hit her head! Ah, the imaginings of kids! :) I remember games like that!

    L. Anne: 22
Some tense slippage, so watch for that next time!
Fantastic story otherwise! Ah, young love!

Looks like this week, Kristy takes the cake! Buzz me and let me know what you'd like this time around! :)

Great job everyone! It gets harder to put numbers to the categories every week! I keep raising the bar in my head, and you all continue to meet it! Keep up the great work!!
